Assessment As, Of and For Learning

My Philosophy

Information extracted from assessments is an extremely valuable resource to determine the students' knowledge and understanding. Assessment provides an opportunity to analyse students' misconceptions and assists in further planning and instructional approaches. As a teacher, I aspire to assess students' with purpose and to ensure every child is not merely a piece of data but an individual face.

“It is not the teacher's proper task to be constantly testing and checking the understanding of the learner. That's the learner's task, and only the learner can do it. The teacher's job is to answer questions when learners ask them, ir to try to help learners understand better when they ask for that help.”

Mathematics
Money Maths

During my Mathematics unit, I undertook the following forms of assessment:

*Diagnostic- Completing a pre-test to assess the skills, abilities, prior                                       knowledge and difficulties the whole class were experiencing.

*Summative- Used through a post-test to meausre the level of achievement                             in relation to results from the pre-test. Also used to judge and                             reflect my teaching effectiveness.

*Formative- Used to provide meaningful feedback for students on the pre                               and post-test and also immediate oral feedback throughout the                           various lessons. Using the students attitudes and actions to                                 inform my further teaching.

*Informative- Circulating the classroom to monitor students, using probing                               questioning techniques to gain understanding and providing                                 students with opportunities to report on their learning                                           experiences.

*Formal- Pre and post test and analyse of data.

During this unit, I have aimed to demonstrate numerous AITSL Standards.  I have executed my ability of Standard 3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs by using the various assessments to evaluate and further develop my teaching. I have also focused on Standard 5, Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning by assessing students in a variety of ways. I then used the assessment results to provide feedback to the students and make comparable judgements about the future learning needs.

Writing
7 Steps Writing Programme

During writing, I undertook the following forms of assessment:

*Formal- Formal notes on the progress on their writing as seen in                                      examples. Giving constructive feedback for the students to use                            before publishing their writing pieces.

*Formative- Used to provide meaningful feedback for students on their                                   reading. Using the students abilities and attitudes to inform my                           further teaching.

*Informative-Observation and monitoring of students work throughout class.                            Also, providing opportunities for students to present or report                              upon their learning and teaching experiences

During reading, I aimed to produce my knowledge of Standard 5, Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning. I have achieved this Standard by verbally providing constructive feedback to the students on their reading. I have also used the reading notes I constructed to make judgements about their reading groups and where to take the lessons next.

Science
Floating and Sinking

During the Science unit, I undertook the following forms of assessment:

*Diagnostic- Completing a pre-test to assess the skills, abilities, prior                                       knowledge and difficulties the whole class were                                                     experiencing before planning the following experiences.

*Summative- Used through a post-test to meausre the level of achievement                             in comparison to results from the pre-test. Also used to                                         reflect and critque my teaching effectiveness.

*Formative- Used to inform my further teaching by identifying the certain                               learning needs of the students. Used to provide immediate and                           meaningful feedback to students to continue their positive                                   learning experiencs.

*Informative- Circulating the classroom to monitor students progress.                                        Asking students probing questionings to gain understanding.                               Providing students with opportunities to sharetheir learning                                 experiences with the wider community at the Science expo.

*Formal- Pre and post test and analyse of data.

During my Science unit, I have obtained an excellent knowledge of Standard 5, Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning. I have achieved this Standard by constructing a pre and post test to determine the shape of the unit. I have also provided feedback to the students throughout the unit and made judgements on the progression of the unit. Lastly, I have examined data collected from the pre and post test and used that to reflect on the unit materials and my teaching practices.
